正式発表から2ヶ月以上待ってようやく予約受付がスタートしたGoogleの最新スマートフォン「Pixel 6a」
発表直後から大きく注目されているのがディスプレイ指紋認証に対する評価です。昨年秋に発売された「Pixel 6」と「Pixel 6 Pro」では、ミスが多発するといった声も大きく聞かれました。
Googleによれば「Pixel 6a」には、異なる指紋認証センサーを搭載したとのこと。先行入手した人物が公開した動画では明らかな改善が見られましたが少数なサンプルです。
メディアによる多数の先行レビューでは、どのように評価されたのでしょうか。
Pixel 6と同じ問題が起きている
全体評価で9/10点をつけたAndroid専門メディアのAndroid Policeは、Pixel 6aに搭載されている光学式の指紋認証センサーについて、信頼性はかなり高いとしながらも、認証が弾かれるまでの時間が長いといったPixel 6と同じ問題が発生していると指摘しています。
具体的には、ディスプレイ指紋認証センサーを搭載する他のスマートフォンほど、高速で一貫した信頼性があるものではないと評価しました。
Set in the display is an optical fingerprint reader, and it seems to be pretty reliable, though I still run into the same issue I do on the Pixel 6, where it will take longer than expected to say “no,” and it’s not quite as fast or consistently reliable as some other phones with in-display readers are.
濡れた指で画面ロックを解除できない
同じく全体評価で9/10点をつけたMobileSyrupは、Pixel 6の指紋認証センサーについて何の不満も感じていない珍しい人間とした上で、Pixel 6aの指紋認証センサーはPixel 6より高速ではないし、正確性も変わらないと評価しています。
ただ、不満な点として濡れた指で認証できない光学式指紋認証センサーの問題をあげています。
In the lead-up to the Pixel 6a launch, there were a ton of rumours flying around about the smartphone including an improved in-display fingerprint scanner. In my experience, the 6a’s scanner is no faster than the Pixel 6 and is just as accurate. Granted, I seem to be one of the few people who hasn’t had any issues with the Pixel 6 fingerprint scanner – it’s worked very well for me, except with wet fingers. The Pixel 6a was equally as good for me.

保護シートを使用しても信頼性は損なわれない
9to5Googleは、Pixel 6のディスプレイ指紋認証について信頼性は高いものの遅いと評価した上で、Pixel 6aには、わずかな改善が見られると報告しています。
具体的には、Pixel 6 Proよりも“1ティック”だけ速く、横に並べて違いを比べた時だけ違いがわかるとのこと。また、安い保護シートを付けた場合でも信頼性が損なわれることなく、指紋の再登録は必要ないとのこと。
A common point of contention on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro was the fingerprint sensor, which was criticized by many as being slow, inaccurate, and unreliable. Our take on the sensor was much less harsh, as we felt it was slow, but fairly reliable for the most part.
The Pixel 6a is a slight improvement on the whole. It feels a tick faster than the Pixel 6 Pro, but just barely. You’d really only notice the difference in side-by-side usage. In terms of reliability, I didn’t really have any complaints. A sweaty hand triggered a series of missed results, but that was the only time I had any problems. Even installing a cheap screen protector didn’t hurt the sensor, to the point where I didn’t even have to retrain my fingerprint.

Galaxy S22と比べて遅く感じる
The VergeもPixel 6aとPixel 6を並べて使うと、Pixel 6aの方が反応が速いことがあるものの、反応速度が同じ時も同じぐらいの頻度であるとしています。
さらに、認証を失敗して再スキャンを求められることや、指をディスプレイに乗せる時間を少し長くすることを求められることも同じように多いと報告。高速な超音波式センサーを採用するGalaxy S22と比べると、認証速度が遅く感じられると評価しています。
The Pixel 6A’s fingerprint scanner has been the subject of a lot of speculation — specifically along the lines of “maybe it won’t be as terrible as the one in the 6 and 6 Pro.” I’m not convinced that it’s any better. Using the 6A and the 6 side by side, I can see the 6A sensor responding quicker sometimes. But, just as often, it’s the same speed as the Pixel 6. It also feels just as prone to asking me to rescan my fingerprint or press my finger a little longer. In any case, the Galaxy S22’s sensor feels a touch faster than either of the Pixels’ — and since Samsung’s sensor is ultrasonic rather than optical, it doesn’t fill your dark bedroom with blinding light when you use it. If you were hoping that the 6A would address that Pixel 6 shortcoming, then I’m sorry to say you’ll be disappointed.

日本から撤退したEngadgetは、Pixel 6 Proの遅いディスプレイ指紋認証センサーに慣れてしまったのかもしれないとした上で、Pixel 6aの指紋認証センサーについて悪くないと評価。それでもSamsungに比べれば遅いとのこと。
Maybe I’ve grown used to the Pixel 6 Pro’s sluggish, in-display fingerprint sensor, but the Pixel 6a’s scanner didn’t feel as tricky. It’s still slower than Samsung’s, but it’s serviceable.

他と同様に素早く機能する
Ars Technicaは、Pixel 6のディスプレイ指紋認証について他のセンサーと同様に高速で動作すると評価。現行とは異なるセンサーを採用したPixel 6aについてもうまく動作していると評価。ただし、個体差があるのかもしれないと注意書きしています。
Besides the SoC and overall design, another big change for the A series this year is the adoption of an in-screen optical fingerprint reader. The Pixel 6's fingerprint reader received mixed reviews; mine seemed fine and worked as quickly as other in-screen fingerprint readers, but other reports called the fingerprint reader slow and inaccurate. Google is using a different fingerprint reader on the Pixel 6a, and once again, mine works well. But because this might be a quality-control issue again, it's probably best to aggregate a few Internet reports once the phone hits the streets.

Just like my initial time with the Pixel 6, I have not encountered any severe bugs on the Pixel 6A. Even the fingerprint sensor is much more reliable this time around.

1日を通して失敗するのは数回。大きく改善された
androidcentralは、Pixel 6では頻繁に失敗するのに対して、Pixel 6aでは1日を通して失敗したのは数回であることから大きく改善されたと報告しています。
それでも指紋認証の使い心地が良いとは言えず、期待したほどではないと評価しています。
What's not nearly as good as I had hoped, however, is the in-display fingerprint sensor. Now, compared to the Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro, this sensor is largely improved. I only had it fail on me a few times throughout each day's use on the Pixel 6a, while it fails more often than not for me on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. That doesn't mean it's a good fingerprint sensor experience, though.
指紋認証の評価はバラバラ
多くのレビューをチェックしてみましたが、Pixel 6aのディスプレイ指紋認証についての評価に一貫性はありません。
端末の個体差なのか、指紋の個体差によるものなのかわかりませんが、明らかな改善を主張するメディアもあれば、大きく変わらないとの評価を受けたり、わずかに改善されたとの報告もあるなどバラバラです。
一方で、複数のメディアからGalaxy S22など超音波式のセンサーを採用した機種に比べて遅いという報告されていて、これが最も一貫性のある評価と言えそうです。
Googleが光学式の指紋認証センサーを採用し続ける限り、広範囲かつ大規模な改善は期待できないようです。Pixel 6aのような5万円前半でフラグシップモデルと同等のGoogle Tensorチップを搭載したお手ごろな機種であれば、目をつむる人もいるかもしれませんが、10万円前後のスマートフォンでは厳しい目にさらされることになります。
今年秋発売が予告されているPixel 7シリーズでは、高速かつ信頼性の高い、濡れた指でも問題なく利用できる超音波式の指紋認証センサーへの乗せ替えは必須でしょう。光学式のセンサーを使い続ける限り、この不安な評価から抜け出すことはできません。
結論として1日に何度も発生する画面ロックの解除に一切のストレスを感じたくない人は購入を避けた方が良いでしょう。可能であれば、事前に店頭で許可を取ってPixel 6のディスプレイ指紋認証をお試ししてみてはどうでしょうか。
なお、最終的には各メディアともフラグシップモデルと同じGoogle Tensorを搭載したことや電池持ち、カメラシステム、3年間のOSアップデート／5年間のセキュリティアップデートといった長期的なサポート、抜群のコストパフォーマンスを理由に非常に高く評価しています。
